Gary Matthews Jr.

Still think Matthews is a flop? After an eye-popping 5 yr. $55M contract was granted to a 32 year old journeyman outfielder with one good year under his belt. The Angels took a lot of heat last offseason for giving Matthews so much money, but they are quickly being silenced this season. Matthews is hitting at a .318 clip with 2 HR, 9 RBI, and 6 SB. His stolen base total for this season is already more than he had all of last season. I am a fond believer that Gary will be a great defensive outfielder who will hit over .300 for at least the next 3 seasons. The only problem I have is the length of the deal. As by the end of the deal he will be 37 years old.

I agree with the previous comment. He may do good this year, but i don't see him performing over the long-run...my prediction is an above average 07 and 08 seasons, and then all downhill from there. In my opinion, the Angels would have been much better with the younger, more consistent Juan Pierre, who has a much better track record and signed for a cheaper deal with the Dodgers in the offseason.
